Mental Health

Around one in four people in the UK suffer from a mental health condition every single year. We believe that taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. Sometimes your mental health can be affected by physical symptoms and vice versa. We can help you with a diagnosis and treatment, so you can move forward with your health.

Take care of your mental wellbeing

Problems that affect our mental wellbeing can be just as debilitating as physical illness and, in some cases, may also cause physical symptoms. If you have concerns about your own mental health, or that of someone close to you, tell a friend or Professional and start to get the help you need.

Depression & Low Mood

We all have times when our mood is low, and these feelings usually pass over time and we can get back to being ourselves. Depression is a low mood that lasts for a long time and can affect your daily life. Everyone feels low sometimes, but you may be suffering from Depression if these feelings haven't gone away and start to interfere with your daily life.

Depression tends to cause physical symptoms including: poor concentration, lack of energy, sleeping too much or not enough, change of appetite, no motivation. One in five people suffer with Depression at some point in their life. It is very important to speak to someone if you recognise any of these symptoms as Depression can usually be treated successfully with a combination of counselling, therapy and/or medication.

Anxiety & Stress

Many people suffer from anxiety and/or stress, and a lot of the time the two go hand-in-hand. It is normal for us to feel nervous, or worry about things in our lives. Some symptoms of anxiety disorder include: panic attacks, nausea, butterflies, difficulty sleeping, racing thoughts, feeling unable to switch off/relax and withdrawing from things you usually enjoy. You should see a GP if you have noticed these symptoms interfering with your daily life.

Student Mental Health

We appreciate that student life can sometimes bring as much pressure as it does fun. You’re in a new environment, perhaps living on your own for the first time, and possibly even in a new country.

There has been a sharp rise in students dropping out of university due to mental health problems. Research has shown that there has been an increase in reporting of mental health issues amongst student populations throughout the world. In Scotland alone, more than 11,700 students asked for help in 2016-17 compared with about 7,000 in 2012-13. Throughout the UK there was a 53% increase in reporting of student mental health problems over the same period. If you have concerns about your mental health, please book a GP appointment or contact the University student support services.
